Jagas Paving is very pleased to bring HYDROPAVERS™, a range of pervious pavers, to New Zealand. The need for hard surfaces that mitigate rainwater run-off has increased substantially. Environmental imperatives and Council requirements are now a reality, not to mention the practicalities like constructing car parks and footpaths that don’t puddle.

How do HYDROPAVERS™ Permeable Paving tiles work?

Available in attractive colours, HYDROPAVERS™ pervious pavers behave like a sponge, retaining water and eventually letting water flow through without inhibition. Run-off is eliminated or reduced in two quite distinct ways.

  • First and most importantly the permeable paver ABSORBS and retains the rainwater. If 5mm of rain falls in an hour, all the rainwater will be retained inside a  55mm thick Hydropaver. (Auckland rainfall averages about 3.5mm per day). This rainwater can then evaporate back into the air; no water passes through the pervious pavers or runs off into drains.
  • Secondly, if the brick is saturated the rainwater will flow through the paver at a rate of 38mm per minute.

Typically the pavers are laid onto an aggregate bedding; but the installation design depends on the geotechnical features of the ground to be covered.

NOTE: Because of the way HYDROPAVERS™ behaves, compaction of the ground (by vehicle traffic for example) is much less of an issue. Councils tend to classify any ground that carries vehicles, even natural surfaces, as impermeable.

HYDROPAVERS™ is a ceramic product compressed at 1600 tonnes and baked at 1200°C. This means that your paved surface will remain pervious for its lifetime. The high compressive strength and durability  mean the permeable pavers have a very long life.

For Councils to accept that the surface is permeable (ie. not impermeable) the installation has to be able to deal with a one-in-ten year rain event of 10mm. HYDROPAVERS™ permeable pavers can absorb more than that. Some concrete paving products call themselves permeable but they rely entirely on the spaces left between the pavers – which can clog up of course and absorption by the base aggregates.

HYDROPAVERS™ pavers are available in dimensions of 300 x 300 x 55 and 200 x 100 x 55.  Thicknesses of 30mm or 40mm can be supplied on special request. Black, Off-White and Grey pavers are also available in a larger 600 x 300 x 55 format.

Benefits of HYDROPAVERS™ pervious pavers

Good water permeability – Water can flow naturally and quickly through the paving, allowing quick and even dispersal. Rapid run off and erosion, heavy flows in city drainage systems and uneven settling of paving due to irregular distribution of groundwater are all avoided.

A whole new way of looking at drainage – With HYDROPAVERSpervious paving in place, the whole paved area is effectively a storm drain. HYDROPAVERS™ have a superior run-off performance to grassed areas for drainage design purposes – some grassed areas do require surface drainage to protect buildings from run-off ingression. Water no longer has to be sloped into drain gratings. Paved areas can even become the source of water storage from a plaza, path or driveway. The permeable paving filters the water. Engineers now have a new tool for storm water management and we look forward to some innovative solutions!

Smooth Resource Consent process – With driveways, paths and urban areas made ‘non-impermeable’ it is much easier to achieve the required permeable area in any design.

Regular surface temperature – The excellent permeability of the paving surface creates a regulated surface temperature and surface humidity. Avoids the ‘heat island phenomenon’.

Versatile, good looking, non-slip surface – HYDROPAVERS™ permeable paving tiles are suitable for public spaces, walkways and plazas, and flooring in interior wet areas, providing an attractive surface and anti-skid surface for safety with aesthetic appeal. Baked-in colours stay sharp for years with no fading.

Safety and comfort – Pervious paved driving surfaces mean no pooling of water and reduced light reflection at night. Drier pavements and roads are far safer and more pleasant for both pedestrians and drivers.

Dispersal of water haze – In city areas, large areas of non-porous surfaces can lead to excess moisture in the air, which contributes to the lingering effect of urban pollution. Pervious paving helps water disperse naturally, and allows particulates to settle from the atmosphere faster.

Noise reduction – Pervious pavers can absorb vehicle noise and city hubbub, contributing to a peaceful environment.

Benefits to Environment – Tests show that a HYDROPAVERS™ paver can absorb and retain about 20% of its own volume of water.  This means that most, if not all, of the rain falling on the paver is retained and returned to the atmosphere.  Tests also show that storm water can pass through saturated HYDROPAVERS™ paving at the rate of 1800mm (or about 18 months average Auckland rainfall) every hour.

So the pavers:

  • Prevent storm water run-off, and increase the underground water supply
  • Prevent soil erosion caused by storm water run off
  • Prevent solid waste from entering rivers, ocean and underground water supply

Advantages over concrete alternatives

  • Permeability of the whole surface. Conventional concrete alternatives rely entirely on (larger) gaps between the pavers, so lose permeability if/when the gaps are clogged.
  • Very substantial strength and aesthetic advantages over are so-called “porous” pavers which are made of concrete with no fines (small particles), making the concrete porous. The voids in porous pavers severely reduce strength (<12MPa, light vehicle traffic only), encourage clogging (which reduces permeability) and give the paver a rough, hard-to-clean appearance.
  • Cheaper and less frequent maintenance
  • Better looking and with a much wider colour range. Tactile paver option available

NOTE: HYDROPAVERSTM paving should be laid so that the resulting surface does not slope more than 5% (1:20). In the case of driveways, HYDROPAVERSTM may be used on some steeper slopes provided that the installation is properly designed (engineered) to cope with any unabsorbed run-off during heavy rain.
